Vintage limited edition Vade Mecum Jubile Rolex book set. Circa 1940’s. Complete four (4) book set with original Rolex slip cover. Text in French. Second edition. Numbered limited edition of 1000 sets. The books have illustrations and describe the history of Rolex, the founder Hans Wilsdorf, the inventions, innovations, and mechanics behind Rolex pocket watches and wrist watches. The translated titles of the books are: Step By Step, The Evolution of the Wrist-Watch Chronometer, How The Waterproof Watch Came Into Being, and The Story Of The Self-Winding Watch. Matching edition number on all of the books.
All of the books have areas of bumping, creasing, foxing, spotting, and discoloration due to normal usage and age. Overall condition of the books is good. The slip cover has wear around the edges especially the top and bottom corners of the spine.
In 1905, Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, founded their company Wilsdorf & Davis Ltd. In 1908, they registered Rolex and became Rolex Watch Co Ltd in 1915. After moving their headquarters to Geneva, Switzerland, the company name was changed to Montres Rolex S.A. in 1920. Rolex introduced the first waterproof Rolex Oyster in 1926. The following year, Mercedes Gleitze swam for 10 hours across the English Channel wearing a Rolex Oyster. Rolex invented the first self-winding automatic movement with rotor in 1931. Rolex watches became popular in the fields of aviation, motor racing, sports, and expeditions.
