Lot #3129 Leonidas Oversized Military Pilot Watch

Estimate: $2,500.00 – $3,500.00

Rare oversized stainless steel and nickel Leonidas Cronografo a Ritorno chronograph watch.  Circa 1940’s.  Black Leonidas dial with Arabic numerals with blue hand.  Features reversing stop watch for equal distance bomb sight, height graduated in meters, military watch with round single button, bidirectional chronograph.  Mechanical manual wind.  Hinged case back.  Comes on a leather pilot style strap.  Approximate diameter is 57mm without crown, 77mm with crown, 22mm thick case.   This instrument is a rare version of a chronograph with a hand running both forwards and backwards.  It was used by several Air Forces to calculate the elapsed time for throwing bombs.

Has some scratches and areas of discoloration throughout due to normal usage and age.  The dial has spotting and discoloration throughout.  The hand has discoloration and small areas of the lume are absent.  Overall condition is fair.  Running at the time of inspection, however not checked for accuracy nor water resistance/proofness.  An overhaul is always recommended for used watches.

Julien Bourquin founded Leonidas Watch Factory in 1841.  Constant Jeanneret-Droz bought out Leonidas in 1912.  During this time period Leonidas manufactured chronographs and instruments used in aviation and auto racing.  The Leonidas Watch Factory merged with Ed Heuer in 1964 to become Heuer Leonidas.
